Chinese Immersion Day 2018

March 24 @ 8:30 am - 3:00 pm

Chinese Immersion Day 2018

Date: Saturday, March 24, 2018
Time: 8:30 AM – 3 PM
Location: Fox Island Nichols Community Center (690 9th Ave Fi, Fox Island, WA 98333)

Admission: Free! All middle school, high school, and college Chinese language students are welcome to attend. Please have students register and fill out the liability waiver: Chinese Immersion Day 2018.

During this event, participants will:

  • Commit to speaking only in Chinese for the day.
  • Meet other students who share your love of Chinese language and culture.
  • Experience what it’s like to rely on Chinese to communicate.
  • Practice with native speakers.
  • Absorb new vocabulary in a fun and friendly environment.
  • Explore Chinese music, movement, crafts, games, food and more.

Please note that the entire event is conducted in Chinese only. The students sign a pledge to speak only in Chinese, and all teachers present their workshops “immersion style,” using no English.

Previous workshops have included calligraphy, Beijing opera, Chinese chess, Mahjong, bamboo dance, Chinese jump rope, Chinese knotting, paper cutting, paper folding, painting, poetry, folk songs, cooking, Taichi, clay Terracotta Warriors, and more.

We are also looking for teachers to volunteer. You can either teach one or more workshops, or simply help out. With the generous support of the Confucius Institute of WA, we are able to cover mileage for all volunteers, plus a $100 honorarium for those teachers who lead workshops. (Please note that if teachers or volunteers are coming from outside the Puget Sound area, we may not be able to cover the total cost of mileage.)

If you have a Chinese cultural or musical activity that you would like to share, we would love for you to participate. To sign up or to find out more, please email Heidi Steele at steeleh@psd401.net.
