5th Annual Seattle Chinese Garden Peony & Bamboo Festival

May 6 - May 7

ALERT !

The Peony & Bamboo Festival is postponed
due to predictions for a rainy and windy weekend.

We hope to reschedule for May 6-7, 2017.

Mother Nature rules over the peonies too.

Most of the plants have big buds and many have been showing color for the past 10 days (photo below), which had given hope for good blooming by this weekend. But as of Thursday, with continuing cool and raining weather, only two peonies had started to open up. Like us, they are looking for more sunshine and warmer weather.

Invoke the sun spirits!

Stay tuned for updates next week.

This Luoyang Red peony, photographed on April 12,
showed good promise of blooms to come… alas, not by this weekend.

5th Annual Seattle Chinese Garden Peony & Bamboo Festival

Date: May 6-7, 2017

Time: 10 AM – 4 PM

Location: 6000 16th Avenue SW, Seattle, WA 98106

Celebrate Earth Day in the garden and enjoy a colorful festival focused on two of China’s horticultural treasures. The weekend features cultural entertainment, displays, Chinese artist painting demonstrations, and plant sales. A rousing lion dance on Saturday at 11: 30 am gets the qi energy circulating. Be sure to attend the 2 pm performance of Chinese dance, song, martial arts, and the special opportunity to be amazed by a Sichuan face change artist.

Available for purchase are potted tree peonies from China and unusual varieties of bamboo from specialty growers in our region. This year the Pacific Science Center will provide information on its Terracotta Warrior exhibit, and festival attendees can take selfies with the Garden’s two terracotta warrior replicas.

Special activities for children (and all kids at heart) include a performance by the hugely popular Bubbleman at 12:30 on Saturday. On Sunday at 1:30 pm, everyone will enjoy traditional Chinese folk dances performed by an award winning youth group, and lovely er hu melodies wafting through the garden during the day. Teachers from the Confucius Institute are offering Chinese craft activities for children on both days. Plus enjoy yummy food and snacks at three Chinese food booths outside the Chan Center.

Fun for everyone! Suggested adult donation is $5.
