2019 “Why Learn Chinese” Competition

The Washington Association for American and Chinese Education (WAACE) is now accepting entries for the 2019 “Why Learn Chinese” Competition!

What: An essay/song video competition
Who: Middle School and High School students in WA

Submit entries here: 2019 WLC Competition

Submission deadline: Friday, January 12, 2019

Two ways to participate:
  • Essay (400-800 words)
    • Prompt: Challenging and Exciting Moments on My Journey to Learning Chinese
  • Music Video (singing at least 1 minute)
    • Contestants can perform one of these options (either alone or with a group):
      • a Chinese song
      • an original Chinese song
      • translate a non-Chinese song to Chinese
      • Chinese chants and rap

Awards (separate for both categories):

  • 1st Place: $100 (1 winner)
  • 2nd Place: $80 (3 winners)
  • 3rd Place: $50 (5 winners)
  • Finalists (top 15%): Certificate of Excellence
  • This year we also offer a Contribution Award to the teacher who has the most students submitting entries. The award carries a cash prize of $100. Please make sure to include your teacher’s name on the registration form.


  • Contestants will receive a confirmation email within one week of entry submission.
  • Winners will be announced on Jan 27th. Each entrant will receive an email.

Everyone is welcome to attend the award ceremony on Feb 2, 2019 at the Central Washington University satellite campus in Sammamish, followed by a Lunar New Year Celebration.
