On December 17th, CIWA organized the 20th lecture in the Talks on Chinese Culture Series (also known as “Culture Salon”). Zhu Xi, a PhD student from the Department of Asian Languages and Literature was invited to give a talk on early Chinese bamboo strip manuscripts at the East Asian Library at University of Washington in Seattle. An audience of over thirty people were present at the talk and participated in the discussion afterwards.

The Chinese Director of CIWA Dr. Zhou Jun introduced the speaker Zhu Xi and the cultural talk series at the beginning. Zhu Xi’s research focuses on early China period, with particular interests in the composition, transmission, and reception of early Chinese texts. The talk started with the origin and history of using bamboo as media for writing. Zhu Xi also covered modern archaeological discoveries of bamboo strips from multiple sites, providing an interesting background for manuscripts research. By comparing transmitted and excavated texts, Zhu Xi demonstrated the significance of studying bamboo strips. The talk was informative with ample text references and data analysis, and was well received by the audience.

Talks on Chinese Culture is a unique cultural program organized by CIWA. Also known as “Cultural Salon”, the talks are of great variety and are delivered in the form of small lectures and seminars. The targeted audience is the general public (UW students, faculty, staff and the local community) who are expected to have minimal or no knowledge of Chinese. CIWA also cosponsor the talk series with the East Asian Library, Chinese Students and Scholars Association and various departments of the university. Previous speakers include visiting scholars from China and researchers at University of Washington.
