From April 14 – 24, 2014 21 students and teachers from Chief Sealth International High school, embarked on an 11-day cultural tour in Chongqing, China. The American students lived with Chinese host families and attended classes at Nankai Secondary School. Since 2002, Chief Sealth has sent five groups of students and teachers to Chongqing for the exchange program since the sister-school connection was established between Chongqing Nankai Secondary School and Chief Sealth International High School. Now more than 100 students and over 10 teachers have benefited from the program. In 2010, the program expanded when the Chongqing Municipal Education Committee and Seattle Public Schools set up the Education Center of the Confucius Institute of the State of Washington in Chief Sealth International High school.
Chongqing Nankai Secondary School arranged activities for the American students, like paper cutting, martial arts, Chinese folk dance, Chinese folk music, and Chinese classes. In the paper cutting class, the teacher taught the students how to cut works into different shapes and shared the cultural connotation of some Chinese characters such as “Fu” (blessing) and “Xi” (Joy). In the martial arts class, students were deeply involved in learning every movement from the teacher. When practicing Chines Kung Fu, students tried to imitate Jackie Chan. In Chinese class, the American students had a seminar with Chinese teachers discussing Chinese characters and translation strategies for Chinese menus.
American students and teachers also visited local tourist attractions, including the Three Gorges Museum and the Da Zu Rock Carving; students also learned about the Ba Yu culture (local culture) and Chinese Buddhist culture. At the end of the cultural tour, many American students expressed that they have gained much from their experience in Chongqing. A girl named Gwynne Benton said she had keen interests in Chinese language and Chinese culture through the her education at the CIWA Education Center classroom, and this trip to Nankai has inspired her to study in a Chinese university after she completes her high school education in the US.
