The Chongqing Municipal Education Commission, the Chinese partner institution of Seattle Public Schools, was honored to receive the award for Chinese Partner Institution of the Year at the 2017 Global Confucius Institute Conference in Xi’an China on December 12, 2017.
From the letter of support from Seattle Public Schools:
To: Hanban Awards Committee
On behalf of Seattle Public Schools and the Confucius Institute of the State of Washington (CIWA), on whose Board I am serving, I am pleased to recommend that our CIWA Chinese Partner, Chongqing Municipal Education Commission (CMEC), be recognized as Chinese Partner Institution of the Year.
I personally am grateful for the opportunity I had in fall of 2015 to lead a delegation from Seattle to Chongqing and visit our partner schools, Nankai Secondary School and Renmin Primary School, in person. During the trip, the Chongqing Municipal Education Commission arranged a very informative meeting with Chongqing principals to exchange ideas about our two educational systems. This trip strengthened our relationships across the Pacific Ocean and opened new opportunities to our students. I am very pleased that CMEC will be hosting another delegation of Washington educational leaders in November 2017, including several principals and representatives from Seattle Public Schools.
In April of 2016, Seattle was proud to open a new Confucius Classroom as part of the CIWA Network at Chief Sealth International High School. CIWA also opened new Confucius Classrooms in Bellingham and Issaquah School Districts. CMEC worked tirelessly to make these connections between China and our state possible. In addition, we have two schools, Beacon Hill International School and Dearborn Park International School, which had already partnered with schools in Chongqing under the Asia Society Confucius Classroom Network. This coming year, we look forward to having another Seattle school, Pathfinder K-8, join the CIWA Confucius Classroom Network with a partner school in Chongqing.
One of the most important contributions of this partnership has been the visiting teachers that CMEC has sent to Seattle Public Schools and other district in the state over the past several years. We have welcomed these teachers and they have been greatly loved and appreciated in their school communities in Seattle. It means a great deal to our schools to host visiting teachers from their sister schools in China. When our students visit those schools in Chongqing, they are always thrilled to see familiar faces.
In summary, Chongqing Municipal Education Commission has been an excellent Chinese partner to Seattle Public Schools and the entire state of Washington. Thank you for considering CMEC for this great honor in 2017.
