American Confucius Classroom Students Receive Encouragement from President Xi

Skyline Confucius Classroom students, Joseph Yang, Nathan Shih, Angela Shi and Kimberly Heitkamp, just received a truly memorable letter from the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China. In the letter, In the letter, Consul General Luo Linquan expressed appreciation and encouragement from Chinese President Xi Jinping and the first lady, Professor Peng Liyuan.

Inspired by President Xi’s recent visit to the state of Washington, Joseph Yang, on behalf of the Skyline Confucius Classroom students and students from other schools, wrote a letter to President Xi for support in Chinese learning. Kimberly Heitkamp sketched a pencil portrait for the Chinese president and the first lady. “Both of them were very impressed with your letter and the portrait, which remind them of fond memories of their recent visit in the State of Washington. They encourage you to put more enthusiasm in learning of Chinese language and culture, to participate actively in the friendly exchanges between China and the United States and to be envoys to further enhance the friendship between our two countries,” all ambitions facilitated by the active support of the Confucius Institute of the State of Washington.

The fast growth of the Skyline Chinese program, which recently became a Confucius Classroom, has encouraged the students to dedicate themselves to connecting students from high schools around Washington State in order to bring more Chinese programs into middle and high school curricula. By collaborating with other associations such as the Confucius Institute of Washington, Microsoft CHIME and Chinese Seattle Garden; the student group Washington Association for Chinese Education, or WACE, has succeeded in bringing together the community to promote Chinese cultural awareness to the youth. They are currently working on preparations for the 2016 Why Learn Chinese Competition.

Consul General Luo closed his letter by conveying his holiday wish to the students, assuring them every possible support and assistance. WACE members believe they can achieve more in the coming year, and their programs will create more opportunities for Washington students to learn Chinese in order to broaden their future horizons.

The Chinese version of this statement and more exerts from the letter can be read below.
